Respectfully,
Dan Swanson
With all the job losses, stock market losses, retirement account losses, foreclosures, you would think the city would see that raising taxes is counterproductive. Raising property taxes makes homes that much less able to sell. In a depressed real estate market this is the wrong thing to do.

Letting Kids be Kids for a

Letting Kids be Kids for a Change - Jeff, first and foremost - thanks for all that you do for the children of our community. It is people like you that make many of the PLAY athletic programs possible.

While I agree with the message you are sending in your letter to the editor, I have issues with some of the facts that you are stating. You are suggesting that all games end at 9:45 with lights out by 10:00pm, but the main reason behind asking for the later lights out time was because we couldn't get all the games in (which you stated).

Unfortunately, many parents (including myself) work and are not able to get home right after school to get kids to games and also volunteer as a coach or team parent - so I don't think the answer is to start earlier.

Also, we are experiencing a recession that we haven't seen in over 70 years - where will the extra money come from to build more facilities and fields? We can't even get the funding we need to build the space onto the high school that is busting out at the seams. So I don't think building more will be feasible.

I agree that most of the kids in these programs (including mine) will not likely receive a college scholarship for their participation on the PLAY teams or athletics in general, but they will be a better person for the experience.

The decision made by the City Council was in response to the issue at hand. With all of the children in the PLAY programs that really want to participate - what other choice did they have? Maybe the ultimate answer to your underlying question/statement would be to limit the number of participants in the programs and then the issue will go away - which in my mind would be really sad.

I was so impressed by the level of safety and sportsmanship the kids, their schools and Mpls Gun Club showed at the recent State Trap Shooting Championship. I was equally impressed by the Prior Lake kids' performance and enthusiasm for the sport.

My daughter was one of the few girls that participated. She had a fabulous time and can't wait to be representing PLHS on the team next spring! I certainly hope the school board approves this activity.

Hats off to Chris Hesch and assistant coaches Larry Stier and Scott Conrad for all of their hard work.

A few weeks ago, the City of Prior Lake stated that the city's fireworks display was in jeopardy without additional funding. Thanks to Integra Telecom - the show will go on.

Maybe the City of Prior Lake and the SMSC should combine their efforts going forward rather than having competing fireworks displays? Just a thought!

Im leaning towards you being a school board member now?

Let me dumb it down for you, so you will understand.

I made a comment about the school board making a bad decision, you came back with " Your just a bad mouthing parent why dont you run"

I gave examples of why I dont like the decisions our school board makes, and I will be honest with you though, I do have to say they have improved ten fold since the WesterFraud Era.

Real simple Buckingham is a Local company MY TAXES go to the School board I want them to use local products as much as they can, The bid was not that way of base for the service they received, I know this because I have been a customer of both Buckingham and Dicks ( A Lakeville company), and Buckingham has been nothing short of A+.

Sometimes you pay more for service plan and simple.

No confidence, you are all over the board on your subjects. You start out talking about the trash bid and how it was not fair? Then you go into the running for school board or the City Council. But bring up red Tape. There is no red tape involved with running for a Public office! You go down and apply.

Then you bring up Drug use in the Schools and Baseball caps in the schools.

First of all the School sets the rules and if they enforce it the Parents of the kids get upset.

Drug use in schools in not accepted. The school will and should enforce the policy. The parents of every kid in School should talk to the kids and take 100% responsibility of what the kids can and can't do in School if the kid get in trouble in school the parent should back the school. But most don't!!!

Get off your High horse and take a deep breathe and relax life is way to short to get worked up.

Clueless, I am not but the way you write about one subject and don't want to get involved is!

Bravo to the writer of "Blatant displays of disrespect!"

I whole heartedly agree. As noted, graduation is not a casual event. A graduation is a celebration of four years of hard work and should be treated with dignity and respect. Thus, family and friends showing up clad in jeans or shorts and t-shirts (looking like they just came from a truck rally) should not be admitted to the event. Ticket or no ticket, you are not showing any respect for the graduating class or the student you came to see. Dress appropriately.

The same goes for the obnoxiously loud-mouthed families and friends who can't sit quietly while the names of the graduating students are being announced. Show a little respect and consideration for the other families and students. Remember, your student isn't the only one graduating.

Oh, and turn off the cell phones. There's nothing more absurd than someone sitting at an event with a cell phone stuck to their ear gabbing away. Don't worry; the world won't come to an end if you don't have your phone on for a couple of hours.

Maybe the sentencing for drugs is a joke on those who would protect their children in Scott county. Where is the penalty for drug dealing that will deter them from carrying out further illegal acts.

I think the school board

I think the school board does an excellent job. You are right, however, that the number one issue facing this district is the drugs in the high school. Bring the dogs into the classroom once and you'll be totally amazed at what you find. The kids are not stupid - they know the dogs will only be used to check the cars and lockers. So guess what? They are carrying the drugs with them. I'm tired of hearing about "student rights". This problem has to be dealt with. Anyone caught with drugs in school should be expelled. Period. In the end its as much a safety issue as weapons.

Dicks is a Local company?

Dicks is a Local company? Run for the School Board? I would in a heartbeat if I didnt have to deal with the red tape and parents that think everyone deserves a trophy. As far as bad mouthing an elected official sorry its my right just as its my right to give them a pat on the back when they do something right, which trust me is few and far between. But you are right these men and women try to please many people but guess what they are not, just ask the men and women who pay more taxes to fund and empty school, just ask the owner of Dakota Liquor, just ask the people that are about to get a Kwik Trip in there back yard. But hey what about the houses that get to look out and see that non intrusive water treatment plant. You keep backing a school board that will ban baseball caps but do very little to curb the drug problem in the high school.

So Mr or Mrs Priorlake are you a board member or elected city official?

Good for the School board and elected officials. :)

If you are so unhappy with you School Board and City official’s take a chance and run for one of the up coming openings and see how you do in the election.

Then get ready to for the bad mouthing from people like you.

They have many people to please and for crying out loud you are not one of them.

I think that your comment about dumping the other Local Company that has been around just as long as Tom/Buckingham has was just wrong.

According to the language council members used in the amended resolution they adopted Monday, the "no new inning can begin after 10:30" and the staff shutting off lights if games end early (prior to the new 11 p.m. cutoff) are part of the ordinance.

Thanks Lori. Quick question. Is the "no new inning can begin after 10:30 ..." actually part of the ordinance? I'm curious how this is being communicated and enforced. There has been poor enforcement of the 10:00 curfew. I hope City staff are very strict about the 11:00 curfew. Doesn't matter what the situation is, the lights are off at 11:00. Not 11:05 ....

Just a note to add to this story: The new 11 p.m. lights-out time comes with the caveat that no inning can begin after 10:30 p.m., and if games are done by 10 p.m., city staff should turn off the lights.
